An tAon Éan Amháin

We are proud to announce the completion of our short documentary – An tAon Éan Amháin (A Bird Alone), and are looking forward to collaborating with film festivals across the board and sharing this Irish-language gem with audiences worldwide in 2025 and beyond!

Film Description:
In one of the most sparsely populated and remote regions of western Europe, in a landscape of dizzying cliffs and stormy weather, Gaelic, Ireland’s indigenous language, hangs on by its fingertips. Paradoxically, at a moment when locals are losing touch with their native tongue, interest in the language from the Irish diaspora and many others around the globe has soared. We asked a native Irish-speaker from Portacloy on Ireland’s northwest coast to lay out for us the emotional, cultural and linguistic stakes involved for a people who have witnessed the erosion of their language and local culture beneath the overwhelming force of English and emigration. In this interview, 91-year-old Seán Ó Raghaille, who has spent his entire life in Portacloy, gifted us many unexpected insights into the dynamics of language and cultural change in this once fully Irish-speaking community.

Directed by Meri Tadić, Produced by Christopher Neary, Co-Producer Rua Breathnach, 2025.
